April 4th Meeting Report
We had 5 people show to this month's meeting, we covered a range of topics, as well as plans for future meetings and presentations...
Thanks to those who attended, the discussions were very interesting.
We covered (as usual) a broad range of topics. We did not have any presentations or themes for this meeting (as we have for some previously). We covered may topics including the security implications of "automatic updates" in different operating systems, the security levels of different OSes ranging from different versions of Windows through Mac OS to Linux/BSD/Unix , differences, as well as cell phone and other specialized device vulnerabilities and tweaks.
We talked for a bit about different advantages of different distros such as Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Gentoo, Fedora, RedHat Enterprise, and a few others. We covered some of the history of DARPAnet/ARPAnet/Internet. We covered discussion of the evolution of OpenBSD (as an overlap to DARPA funding, and it's reasons for termination, and the OpenBSD move to Canada and fully donation funded).
We talked about how the Service Station, where we meet, is a total non-profit with it's proceeds going to many local charities, and some foreign benefits as well (I had met with the owner shortly before the meeting began, and learned more about all they have been doing, quite impressive).
We started looking into any security issues and/or virus concerns with the Palm OS 5.x (need to delve further on that topic).
We talked about maybe showing a video clip from various documentaries on "hacking" and related topics, or at least excerpts, at future meetings, if we get the attendance a little higher. So we discussed what the different ones might be, I have over 20 different ones (including 2600's Freedom Downtime video I bought years ago.
There were other discussions, but that's what I recall off the top of my head.
Hope to see more folks at next month's meeting on Friday, May 2nd, 2008, 5-8 pm. Many thanks again to those who did make it.
